Taratanci’s mission is to present Bulgarian folklore to today’s audiences in an innovative, engaging and accessible way by reinterpreting it through contemporary design and creative methods. We aim to spark curiosity and attract new audiences by offering a fresh perspective on folk dances, tales and crafts, contributing to the preservation of Bulgaria’s intangible cultural heritage.
Taratanci develops products such as educational games and services including workshops, performances and team-building activities that promote cultural identity and build useful skills for modern life. One of the key innovations is a graphic system that visualizes the unique step patterns of traditional Bulgarian horo dances. Using a unique method, the organisation has illustrated over 100 horo dances, turning their movement into visually captivating forms. These depictions form the basis of exhibitions, books and interactive games, allowing people of all ages to engage with folklore in creative and participatory ways.
Taratanci won the Europa Nostra Award in 2021. The organisation is committed to revitalizing Bulgarian folklore through cultural, educational and tourism experiences that transform traditions (crafts, music, dance, rituals and more) into exciting journeys, programs and events that capture the interest of contemporary audiences.
