How we Started

On 31 May 2022, Athens became the second city in Europe, after Kraków in Poland, where a Europa Nostra Heritage Hub was established. The Athens Heritage Hub is the result of the close cooperation between:

  • Europa Nostra – the pan-European federation of cultural heritage organisations,
  • ELLINIKI ETAIRIA – Society for the Environment & Cultural Heritage (ELLET) which is the country representation of Europa Nostra in Greece,  and the
  • Municipality of Athens – the local authorities of the City of Athens.

The aim of the regional heritage hub of Athens is to cultivate an interconnected community of heritage actors across South Eastern Europe (Albania, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Greece, Kosovo*, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia), Türkiye and the Caucasus (Armenia and Georgia).

In May 2023, the Athens Heritage Hub became part of the ambitious European Heritage Hub pilot project, to create  a permanent platform gathering heritage stakeholders and initiatives across Europe. More information about the project can be found here.
