A unique international workshop on the Greek island of Salamina has recently concluded, bringing together young volunteers from across Central Europe and the Balkans to engage in the preservation of the island’s cultural landscape.
From September 1st to 13th, 2025, the island of Salamina hosted a unique international workshop titled “Cultural Landscape Valorisation”. The project, jointly organised by European Heritage Volunteers, ELLINIKI ETAIRIA – Society for the Environment & Cultural Heritage (ELLET), and the Municipality of Salamis, took place within the framework of the European Heritage Hub.
Focused on the historic footpaths surrounding the Mycenaean Acropolis of Kanakia, participants worked hands-on to revitalise the paths that surround the archaeological site — a vital link between past and present. Overgrown and neglected, these paths were reopened, cleaned, and made accessible once again, promoting both heritage conservation and sustainable tourism.
The workshop aligned closely with ELLET’s long-standing initiative “Greek Paths of Culture”, ELLET’s flagship programme that revives traditional trails throughout Greece. These paths, once the arteries of rural and island life, are being restored to support sustainable tourism, promote environmental awareness, and reconnect people with their cultural landscapes.
Educational program & knowledge exchange
Beyond the physical work, the workshop provided a deeply educational experience, including guided visits to other heritage and natural sites, and meetings with professionals in archaeology, heritage management, and landscape conservation. These activities sparked something even more powerful: an exchange of knowledge, stories, and perspectives, which fostered a shared sense of responsibility among locals and volunteers alike.
Participants gained valuable insights into how cultural landscapes can be protected — not in isolation, but through collective action and long-term vision.
Public event
The workshop culminated in a public event on September 11th, where the volunteers presented examples of culturally significant landscapes from their home countries, discussed environmental threats, and shared efforts made to preserve them. The event featured addresses by the Mayor of Salamina, Mr Giorgos Panagopoulos, the board member of ELLET, Ms Ioanna Mikrou, Ms. Marija Konjević, representing European Heritage Volunteers and Ms Stavroula Thravalou, project coordinator of the Athens Heritage Hub. Ms Katerina Stebili, project coordinator of the “Paths of Culture”, presented similar efforts on revitalizing footpaths across Greece and the wider scope of the program “Paths of Culture”.
Reviving Heritage, Inspiring Action
This exchange resonated deeply with the local community. Inspired by the energy and commitment of the volunteers, local residents have already expressed interest for follow-up actions. Plans are already underway to continue the revitalisation of trails across the island, ensuring that the cultural and natural legacy of Salamina remains accessible and meaningful for generations to come.
The “Cultural Landscape Valorisation” workshop stands as a shining example of how cross-border collaboration, youth engagement, and cultural heritage can unite communities, empower action, and build a more sustainable future. As part of the broader vision of the Athens Heritage Hub, the project underscores the role of heritage as a force for sustainability, connection, and hope.
