Society for the Protection of Prespa

Active for over 30 years, the Society for the Protection of Prespa (SPP) is a Greek non-profit, non-governmental organisation. Founded in 1991, it is based in the villages of Agios Germanos and Laimos, in the heart of the Prespa lakes region shared by Greece, Albania and North Macedonia.

They work across borders to preserve the natural and cultural heritage of Prespa, protecting its rich biodiversity and landscape, side by side with the people who live here. The vision of SPP is to see the remarkable environment, wildlife and landscape of Prespa, together with its cultural heritage, sustained for the benefit of all. The SPP brought together all the voices advocating for Prespa’s incredible natural diversity under one umbrella, joining forces with the local community, as well as with many academic, institutional, scientific and NGO partners. Today they has 8 Greek environmental organisations as members, as well as 2 international permanent observers.

Guided by scientific knowledge and many years of experience in protecting the area, SPP strive to limit the effects of climate change and modern lifestyles on the natural environment of Prespa and promote sustainable ways to create a favourable future for generations to come.
