The Europa Nostra Athens Heritage Hub proudly supported and participated in the inaugural national event of the Youth Climate Diplomacy Forum (YCDF), held on Friday, 23 May 2025, at Impact Hub Athens. The event, titled “Shaping the Future: Youth and Climate Diplomacy in Southeast Europe,” brought together passionate young leaders, academics, and policymakers to discuss the critical role of youth in addressing the climate crisis across the region.
As part of our ongoing mission to promote cultural heritage as a force for inclusivity and climate action, the Athens Hub actively contributed to the dialogue, affirming our belief that intergenerational cooperation is essential to building a sustainable and resilient future.
In her welcome address, Ms. Eleni Maistrou, Scientific Coordinator of the Athens Hub and President of the Architectural Heritage Council of ELLINIKI ETAIRIA, emphasized the importance of empowering young voices in climate policy and highlighted the intersections between heritage conservation and environmental justice, as well as the importance of interdisciplinary research.
The panel discussion featured notable speakers including Professor Emmanouela Dousi, holder of the UNESCO Chair in Climate Diplomacy at the University of Athens, George Dikaios, Principal Researcher at the same Chair, and Rania Papadopoulou, Chair of the YCDF. Together, they explored the challenges and opportunities of climate diplomacy, the significance of youth participation in global negotiations like COP, and the need for stronger regional cooperation in Southeast Europe.
The Athens Hub firmly supports the aims and vision of the Youth Climate Diplomacy Forum: to build a regional network of engaged young leaders, promote a just green transition, and counteract the brain drain through meaningful civic and environmental engagement.
As Southeast Europe faces mounting climate risks, the Athens Hub remains committed to fostering dialogue between generations, advocating for climate-conscious heritage policies, and standing alongside youth-driven initiatives that shape a more equitable and sustainable future.
