NGO Mali prst (Little Finger) was officially founded in 2022 with the goal of improving the culture of Podgorica, Montenegro, and specifically deals with youth and the local subculture of Zabjelo (biggest neighborhood in Podgorica) which is known nation-wide for its local cultural heritage of “Republic of Zabjelo” or “Independent Zabjelo” (raised little finger is the unofficial salute of “Zabjelo Republic”). The “cultural independence” of Zabjelo dates from the early 1990s when the war in Yugoslavia broke out, and as a reaction, the youth of Zabjelo proclaimed its “independence” from these events and used it as an umbrella idea for creative and satirical expression, a form of cultural resistance. Today, NGO Mali prst works in support of and in collaboration with the local media outlet Glas Zabjela (Voice of Zabjelo) which created palpable change in the local community, by providing independent journalism, creating quality media content, strengthening the local community, supporting the local football club (FK Zabjelo) and promoting the first ever music festival in Zabjelo, Festival kulture Zabjelo. NGO Mali prst in the last few years has opened two separate spaces for youth and culture: Youth Culture Center Zabjelo (OKC Zabjelo) and Social-cultural Center Pomorandža (DKC Pomorandža). OKC Zabjelo provided free social and educational events and creative courses for youth, and today exists as a free-of-charge creative space for youth and artists, while DKC Pomorandža (Orange) functions as a social-cultural center with regular music, film, educational and social events. The main goal of NGO Mali prst in the coming months will be to help provide support for local media Glas Zabjela with the purpose of reaching economic sustainability of the local media outlet which has been successful at safeguarding and promoting the subculture and values of the local community for 8 years and today its survival as a media outlet remains uncertain. Without Glas Zabjela none of the mentioned local and cultural initiatives would have happened and todays local community and culture landscape would be much different, much less empowered than it really is today.
